Our Maths
At West Hampstead Primary School we are very proud of our work with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) who run a network of 40+ Maths Hubs all over the country. Miss Kwa, is the Primary Lead of the London Central and North West Maths Hub, which began in 2014 led by The St Marylebone CE Secondary School, Westminster and spans Camden, Westminster, Islington, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield.
This means that:
- Our teachers get the most up-to-date training
- Our children get the most innovative teaching
- We share good Maths practice with other schools across the Maths Hub and beyond
As a result, attainment and progress in Maths at West Hampstead is above Camden and national attainment.
2022 Attainment % | WHPS | Camden | National |

Teaching for Mastery Model Lesson - Year 3
On 7th March 2023 Debbie Morgan (Director for Primary Maths at NCETM), Liz Lambert and Emma Patman (both Assistant directors for Primary Maths at NCETM) brought a large group of training Teaching for Mastery Specialists to West Hampstead Primary School to see a model lesson taught to Year 3 Mersey Class. Though the children had already been learning their 8 x table, the lesson looked deeper at the structure of the facts in the 8 x table and helped children make links between the 4 and 8 x tables. The children used cuisenaire rods to see the structure of the maths. Some examples of representations from the lesson are below:
